Many parts of Africa have the highest lightning densities in the world.

NASA Satellite image of lightning density. Flash density is measured in flashes/km2/yr.

While satellite and distant monitoring technologies show more lightning strikes per square kilometer per year around Lake Victoria and other parts of Africa than anywhere else in the world, data that is local and usable for injury and property damage prevention is largely lacking.

ACLENet is working with lightning detection companies, collaborating with national and regional meteorological programs, and partnering with organizations developing unique approaches to gather data and develop Early Warning Systems and educational programs that will minimize deaths, injuries and property damage across Africa.
