CALL for APPLICATIONS
The African Centres for Lightning Education Network (ACLENet), in partnership with the Media Challenge Initiative, invites applications from Ugandan journalists to participate in a two-day capacity-building workshop in Kampala.
The program is aimed at strengthening lightning safety reporting through capacity building and resource support.

About the Training
Lightning is one of Uganda’s deadliest natural disasters, often resulting in fatalities, injuries, and property damage. Sadly, lightning remains significantly underreported with media coverage frequently limited or lacking the technical depth required to effectively inform and safeguard communities.
This initiative seeks to address this gap by equipping journalists with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to report accurately on lightning risks, incidents, and prevention strategies.
Eligibility
Applications are open to:
l Ugandan journalists across print, broadcast, and digital media
l Professionals with an interest in lightning science, environment, disaster risk, or public safety and accountability reporting
l Media practitioners committed to strengthening investigative and solutions-oriented journalism
Training Benefit
Selected participants will:
l Gain a deeper understanding of lightning science and safety practices
l Develop skills in interpreting scientific information and engaging expert sources
l Enhance their capacity for ethical, investigative, and impactful storytelling through solutions-oriented reporting
l Produce content including feature articles, data-driven reports, and visual materials
l Access a network of experts in lightning and related fields
Additional Support
Successful applicants will receive a story grant to support the development and production of lightning-related stories following the training.
Impact
Through this initiative, ACLENet aims to strengthen media capacity, promote accurate and informed reporting, raise public awareness, and enhance community preparedness against lightning risks in Uganda.
Application Process
Interested applicants are required to complete the application form to be considered for participation and eligibility for the story grant.
