The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
The DRC has one of the two highest lightning densities (lightning strikes per square kilometer) in the world. The other is Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. Given that it is one of the larger countries in Africa, it is surprising that there are not more newspaper reports of lightning injuries, which may be due to continuing civil conflict and lack of stability.
The 1998 report along with a lightning strike during an internationally televised soccer game the same year are responsible for sparking a lot of interest in lightning injuries worldwide.
