SEE WHAT'S NEW -- Archives of 2020 Activities
Every month we add new materials and sections to our website. Unfortunately, we know from experience that most of these will be reports of injuries, deaths and property damage from lightning. Please let us know what else you would like to see by using the 'Contact Us' connection - and PLEASE let us know if links no longer work so that we can repair them.

This will be a pilot program in Mbarara district where science teachers will be trained in lightning science and safety to bring it to their schools. We hope the teachers, as leaders in their communities, will report all of the incidents they hear of to build a better database of injuries than we can get from news reports.

In 2015, the NAM Resolution at the ACLENet Scientific Symposium in Lusaka resolved that June 28 should be declared International Lightning Safety Day in memory of the Runyanya Primary School lightning strike on that date in 2011 which killed 18 children and injured 38 others severely enough to be hospitalized. We have added the ILSD logo to the website homepage and ACLENet's May newsletter and will be featuring reports of ILSD activities in the June Flash.

The USA National Lightning Safety Council is an outgrowth of the NOAA Lightning Safety Week team that was active from 2000-2015. Together with the media, this team lowered the average deaths from lightning in the USA to 25 annually for the past decade. For a population of 330,000,000, that means less than one death in 13 million Americans every year! See NLSC plans for the 20th annual US LIGHTNING SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK June 21-27 topped off by International Lightning Safety Day June 28.
