Why are people reported 'burned beyond recognition' when lightning burns are usually superficial?
-
This paper arose from the question, 'Does wearing leather shoes or sleeping on a pad or raised bed decrease the changes or severity of lightning injury?' ACLENet often receives this question from farmers, teachers, and parents at lightning safety educational seminars we give in Uganda. While one would never recommend 'partial measures' such as these in developed countries where 'lighting safe areas' are usually within a few feet or anyone at risk, we sought to find out if lightning injury could be modified in developing countries where there is very little most people can do to decrease their risk of injury. The author, Dr Andrews, is a unique individual with qualifications both as a physician and as an electrical engineer, having done his dissertation on lightning and lightning injury several decades ago.
